Reñaca/Chile, 04 de Mayo, 2007 (Ecoceanos News)— Los países costeros y los con flotas pesqueras presentes en aguas internacionales del Pacífico Sur que participaron esta semana en la reunión para crear una Organización Regional de Administración Pesquera (ORAP), en esta zona, acordaron congelar el esfuerzo de pesca de arrastre en general a partir de septiembre próximo y prohibir la de arrastre de fondo en todas las áreas donde existan o se sospeche existan ecosistemas marinos vulnerables. Esta medida regirá hasta que se realicen estudios científicos que prevengan impactos adversos significativos sobre estos ecosistemas.
La aplicación de esta medida de conservación provisional se aplicará hasta la línea del Ecuador como límite norte y se mantendrá mientras se efectúan las evaluaciones y se establezcan criterios y estándares, de forma de evitar demoras indebidas durante el proceso de negociaciones de la nueva ORAP del Pacífico Sur.
A pesar de esto, la Federación Rusa señaló su oposición a adoptar dicha medida de conservación, bloqueando la posibilidad de un acuerdo de consenso. Y anunció que continuará con sus operaciones de arrastre en la zona en cuestión.
